Alex will provide an overview of the Canadian and global grain and livestock markets. He will include supply and demand analysis of the major grain market drivers and the impact on livestock markets.

Alex was raised in rural Ontario on a poultry farm and gained experience working on local dairy and cash crop farms. He graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. In 2008 Alex was awarded with an MSc in International Political Economy from the London School of Economics in London UK. After completing his Masters degree Alex began his career at Macquarie Bank in London UK working as an Agricultural Commodity Analyst from 2008 to 2011. In 2011 Alex joined Macquarie Bank’s New York office as a Commodity Trading Strategist.

Alex joined Louis Dreyfus Canada Ltd in 2012 as a merchant / analyst primarily trading Western Canadian spring wheat to North American and Latin American markets.

Presentation Title: A Global and Canadian Economic Outlook- Sustaining the Recovery

The Canadian economy is increasingly operating within a global context. The presentation will provide an outlook for the Canadian economy highlighting the opportunities and challenges within this global context.

As Assistant Chief Economist, Paul is responsible for the analysis and forecasting of macroeconomic and financial market developments in Canada, the United States and key overseas economies and is a regular contributor to a number of RBC publications.

A graduate of Queen’s University and the University of Manitoba, Paul joined the Economics Department of RBC in 2007 after working for twenty years at another major financial institution where he was responsible for generating the macroeconomic outlook for the United States, Canada and Canadian regional economies. Paul started his professional career as an economist in the Research Department at the Bank of Canada.

Paul is a member of the Economic Policy Committee of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and former member on the Editorial Board of Canadian Public Policy/Analyse de politiques. Paul is also Past President and Director of the Toronto Association of Business and Economics (TABE).

Dianne Finstad is a broadcaster and reporter who specializes in agriculture and rodeo coverage. She’s spent over thirty years bringing stories to light through television, radio, and print. Based in Red Deer, she began her career at CKRD-TV and radio. Her program ‘This Business of Farming’ was a staple in many rural households around the province. She also worked at KG Country Radio, providing daily farm reports and regular rodeo coverage. As well, Dianne has MC’d at events ranging from Farm Credit Canada Forums to ag conferences and dairy shows. Her work has received numerous awards, and she is an honorary member of the Alberta Institute of Agrologists and the Alberta Human Ecology and Home Economics Association. Dianne is currently doing agriculture, rodeo and speaking work on a freelance basis, and is a regular contributor to publications like Canadian Cowboy Country and Canadian Rodeo News.

Presentation Title: Price Discovery in Fed Cattle Markets: How Thin is Too Thin and What to Do About It?
The volume of trade taking place in negotiated cash fed cattle markets is getting smaller. How small can this volume get before the quality of price discovery is impacted and what can the cattle and beef industry do about it?

Stephen Koontz is a Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics and has been a faculty member at Colorado State University since January 1998. He was on faculty at Oklahoma State University for six years and Michigan State University for two years. His responsibilities at Colorado State University include research, teaching, and outreach. His research and outreach programs are in the areas of commodity market and price analysis, futures markets and risk management, and market organization and performance. His research focuses on livestock and meat product markets. He was a member of the research team that worked on the cattle and beef portion of the Congressionally-mandated 2007 USDA Grain Inspection Packers and Stockyards Administration Livestock and Meat Marketing Study. And he was part of the Oklahoma State, Kansas State, and Iowa State University faculty team that worked on the Congressionally-mandated 1996 USDA Packers & Stockyards Administration Concentration in the Red Meat Industry Study. He is currently working on a study for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association regarding the thinning cash trade in fed cattle.

Presentation Title: U.S. Beef Industry Market Dynamics- Beyond 2014
The U.S. Cattle inventory is at a 60 year low and supply/ demand dynamics during 2014 have led to record prices across the supply chain. Moving beyond 2014, there are likely many more changes ahead as this scenario plays out. How will the constant challenge of capacity, trade, weather, and consumer demand shape the market outlook as the industry heads into 2015 and beyond?

John Nalivka was born and raised in Sheridan, Wyoming and earned a B.S. degree in Animal Science from the University of Idaho in 1976. After working on large family-owned and corporate-owned ranches throughout the Western U.S., Nalivka entered graduate school at the University of Nevada and earned an M.S. degree in Agricultural and Resource Economics with emphasis on production economics and price analysis in 1984.

From 1984 to 1986, Nalivka was an agricultural economist with the Economic Research Service of USDA in Washington, D.C. with primary responsibilities as a cattle industry analyst. Nalivka often refers to his employment with USDA in Washington, D.C. while the 1984 Farm Bill was written as post-graduate education “in more ways than one.” From 1986 until 1988, Nalivka was hired as a Market Information Specialist at Oregon State University and from 1988 until 1991 he held the position of Director of Research at the Helming Group in Overland Park, Kansas.

In January 1991, Nalivka became a partner and Executive Vice President of Sterling Marketing, Inc. helping to develop the economic advisory services that Sterling Marketing offers today. He purchased the firm in 1994 when he and his wife, Sheri, became sole owners.

Nalivka is a member and consultant to the National Meat Association, the Idaho Cattle Association where he is serving his 8th year as chairman of the Marketing Committee. Nalivka served on the Vale School Board for 6 years, serving as chairman for 2 years, and the Vale High School FFA Advisory Board for 6 years. He is currently the Chairman of the Vale FFA Scholarship Foundation Board.

Nalivka is also a principal in Land and Livestock Advisory Service LLC, a ranch resource management and advisory firm and a principal in Sterling Solutions, LLC, which provides source verification and traceability for the beef industry as a USDA approved Process Verified Program.

John and Sheri, have a daughter Susan, and two sons, Joe and Ross, all of whom are married.

Brian Perillat has been the manager at Canfax for over 4 years. Brian grew up on a mixed farming operation near Duck Lake Saskatchewan, and continues to be involved with the family farm. Brian earned an undergraduate and Master’s Degree in agriculture economics from the University of Saskatchewan. Prior to working at Canfax, Brian worked as a livestock production economist with Alberta Agriculture, and also spent over 4 years working with MNP as a farm management consultant. Brian has had the privilege of travelling and working on farms and stations in Australia and New Zealand, as well as visiting farms in north and West Africa.

John F.T. Scott is an economist, consultant and speaker specializing in Canada’s Food Distribution and Retail sector. John analyzes strategies and frequently speaks on Canada’s retail industry to public and private companies, government, trade associations, universities and processing groups.

He is currently Chair of the acclaimed Vineland Research and Innovation Centre. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency (ALMA); the Canadian Agri Food Policy Institute (CAPI); the North American Advisory Board of Monaghan Mushrooms; and is a Past Chair of Markham Stouffville Hospital.

John is one of only three individuals who have received both of the highest recognitions in Canada’s retail food industry – the Golden Pencil and the Spirit of the Independent Award.

John and Michelle live in Niagara on the Lake, Ontario and they have raised three tremendous young people.

Brett Stuart is a founding partner of the Denver-based firm, Global AgriTrends. The firm, founded in 2006, provides global agricultural analysis and market intelligence to a variety of clients around the world. He was formerly employed by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) as their lead economist. Mr. Stuart has conducted on-the-ground meat industry research around the globe.

Brett has also worked for CattleFax providing international analysis for clients in the cattle and beef sectors. He also worked for AgReserves, Inc, and was heavily involved with a variety of livestock marketing and risk management strategies.

Brett was raised on a cattle ranch operating in Utah and Wyoming and also worked in the beef industry in Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Florida.

He received an undergraduate degree in accounting at Utah State University and an MBA from the University of Nebraska.

Jerry is a son of the late Leonard Wulf, a lifelong cattle feeder in western Minnesota. Wulf's were pioneers in the Limousin Breed starting their herd in 1971. They have since grown their beef business to one of the largest integrated beef companies in North America. Their business model spans from genetics to delivering fed cattle weekly for value added markets. The operation today consists of 5 feedyards, 2 cow/calf ranches and 2 stocker ranches. Wulf Cattle operates in a 3 state region, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Nebraska. Jerry’s passion has long been to build a better industry, with strong relationships, listening to customers, and sharing pertinent information up and down the beef chain.

Rich will give an overview of Harmony Beef Company including; current renovations, projected opening date, and future operational intentions.

Rich Vesta, President of Harmony Beef Company, is a veteran of the meat industry. He has worked in nearly every segment of the business and has held executive positions in some of the most prestigious meat companies in the United States including Val Agri, Swift, Monfort, and JBS.

From 1990-2008 Rich was the managing partner at Packerland and JBS. He was able to turn Packerland into a multi plant beef company generating over $1 billion in sales. At JBS, Rich managed the struggling business and generated hundreds of millions of dollars in profits and brought both domestic and international prestige back to the beef division.

In 2011, Rich stepped away from JBS to form his own investment company with the goal of applying his experience and techniques to the challenges of a new era, and teaching a new generation of managers how to build a successful business within the beef industry.
